Edinburgh Fringe Guide 2024
The Shows I Think Deserve a Combination of Your Time/Attention/$$$ at the Edinburgh Fringe
[to see these recommendations sorted by showtime, CLICK HERE]
Hiya Pals!
With the Edinburgh Fringe set to kick off next week, it’s officially time to break out one of my favorite annual traditions.
As far as yearly rituals go, it ranks right up there with filling out a March Madness bracket, judging everyone else’s Spotify Wrapped, and England blowing it in the Euro Finals.
That’s right! The time has come to scour the Festival’s website, comb through reviews on sites like Chortle, The Scotsman, and The Guardian, and research the winners/nominees for all the major awards at the most recent Adelaide Fringe, Brighton Fringe, and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, all in a massive effort to determine which shows to see this year in August.1
Longtime readers may remember the 2023 and 2022 versions of this guide, and early adopters may recall the 2018 and 2019 Google Doc iterations, which I have since converted into backdated Substack posts.
Many of the past nominees and winners of the Best Newcomer and Best Comedy awards have gone on to enjoy major success in various entertainment vehicles.
In 2013, you may have caught Phoebe Waller-Bridge doing a solo show called Fleabag.
In 2016, you might have seen Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd performing his Best Comedy award-winning show, Monkey See, Monkey Do, eight years before his Netflix series aired.
In 2017, you could have seen the world premiere of SIX: The Musical, which went on to be nominated for 8 Tony Awards, four years later.
I could go on and on.
It’s partly stock-picking, partly a crapshoot, and a whole lot of seeing a show on a whim because you overheard someone raving about it in the adjacent urinal stall.
Guidelines / Best Practices:
Remember, this is just a guide, not an itinerary. Don’t feel like you have to see all (or any) of these shows. Ultimately everything comes down to personal taste.
Invest in some nose plugs. Seriously. There is reportedly going to be another bin strike from the city’s refuse workers. When they went on strike over wage disputes for the final twelve days of the 2022 Fringe, I genuinely didn’t notice the smell, nor piles of bin bags until about the 8th day. I guess living in NYC has its perks. This time, the workers are prepared to strike for the whole Fringe, when over a million tourists flock to the city for the month. Expect mountains of discarded flyers and a rat-led Silent Disco by week two of the festival.
Listen for what shows have buzz. I love eavesdropping in the bathroom after a show and hearing people’s true opinions. Word-of-mouth will forever be the best form of advertising because it comes from someone with no vested interest.
In 2023, seven of the eight shows nominated for the Best Comedy award came from either Monkey Barrel venues or the Pleasance Courtyard, including the show that won the award (Ahir Shah: Ends - Monkey Barrel 3).
Additionally, five of the seven Best Newcomer nominees came from the Pleasance Courtyard, and a sixth came from Monkey Barrel (Dan Tiernan).2
In 2022, 6 of the 10 shows nominated for Best Comedy came from Monkey Barrel venues, including the show that won it all (Sam Campbell – Monkey Barrel 4).
Three of the 7 Best Newcomer nominees came from Monkey Barrel venues, including the show that won the award (Lara Ricote – The Hive).
In 2022, three Best Newcomer Nominees were in the Pleasance Courtyard.
Besides Monkey Barrel, the “Big Four” (Gilded Balloon3, Assembly, Underbelly, Pleasance) venue hubs tend to host good shows that get nominated/win awards. My favorite programming outside of those places in recent years has been at The Banshee Labyrinth, Laughing Horse, Voodoo Rooms, and Summerhall.
I like to reward good ad copy and poster design, so I’ll also share some stand-out blurbs and show titles. I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the Advertising major in me still reckons these elements are moderately predictive of a show’s attention to detail, aesthetic, and quality.
For instance, which of the following two work-in-progress shows are you more likely to see, if they’re on at the same venue at roughly the same time?
Show A: a show simply called “Work in Progress” with a blurb that starts “Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Show nominee [REDACTED] returns with a limited work in progress run. As heard on…”, then lists their credits.
Show B: a show called “I Am A Strange Gloop (WIP)” with a description that opens with, “Apparently caterpillars completely break down into goo before they become butterflies”. I know which one I’m picking.
Timeslots are semi-indicative of the show’s quality / likelihood of selling out.
It is often a better use of one’s time to see a one-star show than a three-star show.
Don’t be afraid to let a charming university student talk you into seeing the show they’re flyering for, instead of whatever you had planned in your agenda.
If you know anyone attending the festival this year who feels a little overwhelmed, you’re free to forward this over to them. Since there are now a thousand people reading this mailing list (!!), something tells me this will be the first year my guide actually gets read by anyone.
So without further ado, here is my Annual List of Shows I Think Deserve a Combination of Your Time/Attention/$$$ at the Edinburgh Fringe™.
Absolute, non-negotiable must-sees
Aaron Chen: Beautiful Garden
Show Blurb: 'Life is bristling with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to cultivate one's garden' (Voltaire). 'You're allowed to put whatever you like in your blurb. It doesn't even have to describe the show' (Aaron).
Hannah Gadsby: Woof!
Back at the Fringe for the first time since they won the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2017 and catalyzed an entire movement.
Lauren Pattison: Big Girl Pants
Someone you completely trust with the wheel. You’re in good hands at a Lauren Pattison show.
Her Best Comedy nominated show in 2022 was a personal favorite.
Natalie Palamides: WEER
She’s been getting ovations as if she’s a WWE wrestler when she takes stage at recent Stamptowns. I can only imagine how amplified those cheers will be at the festival that essentially launched her live career (Best Newcomer, 2017).
Rose Matafeo: On and On and On
Rose previously won the award for Best Comedy in 2018 and has blown up since. This year’s show was nominated for Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) this April.
Sarah Keyworth: My Eyes Are Up Here
This hour just won Most Outstanding Show at the MICF, which tends to be a pretty good barometer for great shows, even if they tend to favor Aussies.
If I were an oddsmaker at FringeDuel, I would make this show the slight favorite to win the award in Edinburgh at -550.
I’ve been a Keyworth fan for a long time, and really enjoyed their set at JFL New Faces: International last summer:
Trygve Wakenshaw: Silly Little Things
Probably my single most anticipated show of the festival. The 6’7’’ Kiwi is making his triumphant return to the Fringe after a seven-year hiatus.
His last solo show, Nautilus, is on my shortlist for favorite Fringe shows ever4, and was nominated for the EdFringe Best Comedy Award in 2015.
I still think about bits from Nautilus all the time, particularly the finale – an electric mime burlesque number. The only footage I’ve ever found of it starts at the 7:50 mark of this street performance for a polite, daytime crowd in Japan:
All three times I saw this live, the crowd went bananas the entire time, and Trygve received a larger ovation than actual burlesque. RUN to this show.
One Night Only / Limited Run Events To Prioritize Due to Scarcity:
This is the show I think of when I think of the Fringe. One night only.
Comedians Beer Mat Flipping Championship (13th)
Keep meaning to check this out.
Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee (23-24th)
Show Blurb: You've seen it live (if you live in Australia or New Zealand), on television (if you live in Australia or New Zealand) or illegally pirated it (if you live anywhere else) but now it's time to see it live in the UK! Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee comes to Edinburgh with two star-studded line-ups and a wide variety of words from the English language. For two shows only come and watch your favourite comedians misspell some of your favourite words.
Jack Tucker: Comedy Standup Hour (21st)
Last year’s 55-minute, one-night-only show had a 93-minute runtime. Can he top that this year??
John Norris: Mr. Chonkers (19th)
Los Angeles-based absurdist clown. This show was a comedian favorite in 2022. Back for one night only!
Adam Floods’s Late Night Comedy Rave (11th, 18th)
Flood’s music is genuinely beautiful. I would no joke listen to the songs from last year’s show if they were on Spotify. Keen to see him in this format.
Paul Williams Plays the Hits (19th)
Paul’s music is genuinely beautiful. I no joke do listen to his music all the time on Spotify. A live showcase of old and new songs is a can’t-miss for me.
Randy Feltface: First Banana (9-11th)
An absolutely singular act. Here’s a full recording of his 2016 show, Randy Writes a Novel, which was the first Edinburgh Fringe show I ever picked out for myself after watching Sammy J and Randy appear in the Hannibal Takes Edinburgh documentary. It went on to get nominated for Best Comedy, and remains one of my favorite hours to this day:
Vittorio Angelone: Who Do You Think You Are? I Am! (20-21st)
The 2022 Best Newcomer nominees’s sophomore show was a highlight for me in 2023. It’s on again for two nights this year.
VARIETY SHOWS / MIXED BILLS
2/3rds of a Threesome (and Friends) (22nd-24th)
Mr. Chonkers Presents: Piggy Time (1st-3rd)
RODEO! (8th-10th)
Siblings and Family Friends (7th, 14th, 21st)
Stamptown Comedy Night (3, 15-17, 22-24)
Consistently the best curation of talent across a wide variety of genres (comedy, music, cabaret, dance, burlesque, magic, music). And this year, it’s in a 750-capacity venue. Lord help us all.
Shows like Stamptown, Late’n’Live, and ACMS are great because you can maximize the number of acts you see. Also, when someone only gets 5-10 minutes of stage time, it usually means they’re doing their absolute best material, or are working on something brand new to test out – both of which are a delight to watch. 1-2 acts might miss the mark, but 2-3 will become people whose full shows you end up seeing.
For the record, ACMS also has their own set of recommendations that are probably more spot-on and comprehensive than some yankee’s.
The Stamptown Clownematic Universe:
Michelle Brasier: Legacy
Garry Starr: Classic Penguins
Huge Davies: Album For My Ancestors (Dead)
BriTANicK: Dummy
Also doing two nights of their Cash Grab show
Erin Farrington: Think Better: Manifesting Money, Real Estate and Hot People
Steffen Hånes: The Master
Mark Silcox: Women Only
Caitlin Cook: Writing On The Stall
Riki Lindhome: Dead Inside
I’m biased, but this is an absolute ripper of a lineup. Between musical comedy, character comedy, sketch comedy, nudity, and a vampire, you’re guaranteed to find something that’s your cup of tea – especially if you see Mark Silcox’s show (IYKYK).
Stamptown has had an act earn a Best Newcomer nomination two years in a row (Emily Wilson in 2022, Martin Urbano in 2023). I wouldn’t be shocked if one of Steffen, Riki, or Erin continues that trend.
Shows I’m Gutted I Missed Last Year That Are Back with Limited Runs:
Ahir Shah: Ends
2023 Best Comedy Winner
Chris Grace as Scarlet Johansson
Although it might be released as a Dropout Presents special by then.
Janine Harouni: Man’oushe
2023 Best Comedy Nominee
Jeremy Segway: A Life Out of Balance (23rd ONLY)
I can’t express how badly I want to see this show. One of Viggo’s favorite shows ever.
Kieran Hodgson: Big in Scotland
2023 Best Comedy Nominee. My FringeDuel odds-on favorite to win the award last year.
Rosie Jones: Triple Threat
2023 MICF Most Outstanding Show Nominee
Urooj Ashfaq: Oh No!
2023 Best Newcomer Winner
AWARD-WINNING SHOWS:
2024 Adelaide Fringe, Best Comedy (Joint Winners)
2022 Adelaide Fringe, Best Comedy:
The Umbilical Brothers: Distraction
2024 Brighton Fringe, Best Comedy:
Andrew Doherty: Gay Witch Sex Cult
2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Director’s Choice:
Bronwyn Kuss: Sounds Good
2024 MICF, Most Outstanding Show Nominees:
(in addition to Sarah Keyworth and Rose Matafeo)
Lou Wall: The Bisexual’s Lament
Show Blurb: In 2023, Lou Wall was the first ever lesbian* to go through a breakup. In 2024 Lou Wall will be the first EVER** comedian to write a show about heartbreak. Fuelled entirely by delusion, tequila and the girls' group chat, this is a journey from the pits of personal hell to comic stardom***. Featuring Lou's signature musical comedy, deranged Powerpoints and mentally ill hot takes, this show will make you 100% gayer (derogatory) and cure your depression or your money back.
*Eat my ass. **No srlsly ... eat it. ***The open-mic circuit.
Oliver Coleman: Goof
Show Blurb: Coleman comes onstage, gets straight into it. He's on fire tonight. Something has gone terribly wrong. The audience shout at him to stop. But he's acting like this happens every night. The man's a professional and he's got jokes to tell. It's beautiful in a way, but then the room begins to stink up with smoke and the fire alarm goes off. Everyone is asked to evacuate. Coleman carries on doing the show to an empty room.
Ray O’Leary: Your Laughter Is Just Making Me Stronger
Show Blurb: Every time Ray O'Leary (Taskmaster New Zealand) does stand-up comedy and people laugh, he gets a little bit more strong. Soon he will be the most powerful man in the universe. At the end of this show, he'll be able to lift a car above his head.
Takashi Wakasugi: Welcome to Japan
People I Just Fucking Love
Brennan Reece: Me Me Me
Catherine Cohen: Come For Me
Chloe Radcliffe: Proud Raccoon
Dan Rath: Pariah Carey
Show Blurb: Last year I was bitten by a tick in the central business district. I've since been diagnosed with Lyme's disease, long COVID and chronic fatigue syndrome. I've got enough different flavours of brain fog to start a vape store. I've enlisted an army of nanobots with defibrillators to resuscitate my dopamine receptors so I can listen to dubstep again.
Glenn Moore: Work in Progress
His recent JFL set was a standout for me at International Faces:
Guy Montgomery: Over 50,000,000 Guy Fans Can’t Be Wrong
Show Blurb: Guy Montgomery (Taskmaster NZ, Guy Mont-Spelling Bee, born at Wellington Women's Hospital 1988) hasn't been to the UK since 2019 but he is coming back to show everyone how funny he has become in the intervening years.
Kiwi with dry, super smart and subversive stuff.
This spot is pretty representative:
John-Luke Roberts: John-Luke-A-Palooza!
Description: John-Luke Roberts does every solo comedy show he’s ever done in a row, and then goes back to the first one and does them again until the Fringe runs out.
JLR’s show titles include: “Stnad-Up”, “Stdad-Up, “Look on My Works, Ye Mighty, and Despair! (All in Caps)”, “After Me Comes the Flood (But in French) drip splosh splash drip BLUBBP BLUBBP BLUBBPBLUBBPBLUBBP!!”, and “All I Wanna Do Is [FX: GUNSHOTS] With a [FX: GUN RELOADING] and a [FX: CASH REGISTER] and Perform Some Comedy!”. I’m particularly looking forward to Stdad-Up and the Spice Girls one.
Jordan Brookes: Fontanelle
His 2017 show (Body of Work) was nominated for Best Comedy, and his 2019 show (I’ve Got Nothing) won the whole thing. Great physical comedian.
Josh Glanc: Family Man [directed by the aforementioned John-Luke Roberts]
Show Blurb: Josh Glanc is back with a brand-new show. Fresh from sold-out runs at the Soho Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe, Just For Laughs London and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Don't miss it. Or do. I don't really mind. I'm just the guy who writes his copy. If fact, he doesn't even pay me. You know what. Screw him. I'm going to write whatever I want. Lalablahabal yimmsdfi yimmo yoooo. Bing Bong Baaahh.
Laura Davis: Albatross
I just think she’s very pleasant to listen to and a skillful storyteller
Mat Ewins: Ewins Some You Lose Some
Category: (a cappella, painting)
His hour last year was categorized under “ventriloquism, flamenco”, and the year before, “light opera, acrobatics”, for those keeping track.
He tends to do high-concept, multimedia laugh-a-minute shows that blow you away with how good he is at structuring jokes, coding, and so much more.
Last year he had everyone in the crowd join a private Wifi network at the top of the show under the guise of us all playing an interactive game together, and immediately loaded malware on all of our phones.
Paul Williams: Mamiya 7
His 2022 show In the Moonlight was the most inspiring show I saw that year. I’m a simple guy, really. If you’re a musical comedian from New Zealand with a line about Marcus Smart, I’m going to be a big fan of your work.
Rhys Nicholson: Huge Big Party Congratulations!
Lightning quick aussie comic with a razor-sharp tongue that’s always a step ahead of the audience. Deliberately campy and a great deal of fun.
Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Plays in 60 Minutes)
What can I say, I’m a sucker for the Neo-Futurists. No idea how it’ll compare to the Chicago troupe, but definitely worth a punt if you haven’t seen this format before.
Shows with Great Titles:
Abby Wambaugh: The First 3 Minutes of 17 Shows
Amy Gledhill: Make Me Look Fit on the Poster
Guy Williams: This Glass House Makes It Easy to See All the Cowards I'm Throwing Stones At
Michael Balazo: Thanks For Murdering My Grandfather, The Mafia! (Not)
Show Blurb: From the maker of Succession and White Lotus, Money™ brings you yet another little white b*tch you will love to hate: Olga Koch.
Runi Talwar as 'Runi Talwar' in Runi Talwar: The Runi Talwar Story
Show Blurb: Indo-Kiwo-Ausso comedian Runi Talwar (writer for Hypothetical) presents the incredible story of a guy who once heard someone say 'get your name out there' and took it too seriously.
Zoë Coombs Marr: Every Single Thing in My Whole Entire Life
Didn’t Make It In The Past But Keen to See Them This Time Around:
Ania Magliano: Forgive Me, Father
2023 Best Comedy nominee with her previous show.
Dan Lees: Vinyl Reflections
Loved his double act The Establishment back in the day.
Dan Tiernan: Stomp
2023 Best Newcomer nominee with his previous show.
Furioza: Man Looking For Trouble
The buzzy clown show last year aside from Julia Masli’s ha ha ha ha ha.
Don't be shocked when this is a Newcomer nom.
Grace Jarvis: Oh! The Horrors!
Wonderful stand-up, directed by Laura Davis.
Greg Larsen: Revolting
Part of that Australian collective Skills in Time along with Sam Campbell and Henry Stone.
Jazz Emu: Knight Fever
Eggerson Keaveney might be my top song on Spotify Wrapped this year.
John Tothill: Thank God This Lasts Forever
Another performer with a super buzzy show last year.
Josh Thomas: Let’s Tidy Up
Sneaky bet to win the main Comedy award.
Paddy Young: If I Told You I’d Have to Kiss You
2023 Best Newcomer Nominee
Tom Cashman: Everything
Fantastic social media presence.
Shows I’m Taking A Punt On:
Amelia Hamilton: Lover, Fighter, Rapper, Writer (WIP)
If you rap and do comedy at the same time, I’m immediately there.
Demi Adejuyigbe Is Going To Do One (1) Backflip
He’s really funny on Twitter/Letterboxd. Also it’s directed by BriTANicK.
The Duncan Brothers: Blood Sword
The creators of the aforementioned Jeremy Segway. Also keen to see their respective solo shows: Rob Duncan: The Basement Child and
Show Blurb: Andy has been abandoned by his brother. The Duncan Brothers are no longer. But the show must go on. All Andy has now is Andy. He won't miss the reassuring presence of his brother one bit. He definitely has a solid hour of relatable comedy that he can deliver by himself without his brother. From the makers of Legs, Logs and Jeremy Segway.
Lee Kyle: Throwing Bottles Into the Sea
Show Blurb: Lee Kyle ('Glorious' (iNews.co.uk)) has been throwing messages in bottles into various seas, due to a mixture of longing for solitude, company and a good story for a Fringe show. And, oh my word does he have one!
Mike Rice: Nasty Character
I really enjoy his podcast with Vittorio Angelone.
Normal Al Yankovic: The Normal Formal
Rob Madge: My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do)
Sneaky 2024 Newcomer Nominee Picks:
Bebe Cave: The Screen Test
Have heard great things about this show.
Hannah Platt: Defence Mechanism
Kemah Bob: Miss Fortunate
Melanie Bracewell: Attack of the Melanie Bracewell
Friends of the Mailing List: (all of YOU!)
Adam Flood: Back of the Spoon
Alcohol Is Good For You (Laugh Mob Entertainment)
Alex Berr: How to Kill a Mouse (WIP)
Alfie Brown: Open Hearted Human Enquiry
2022 Best Comedy nominee. Another one I wouldn’t be shocked is outstanding. Super thoughtful performer and writer.
Amelia Bayler: Easy Second Album
Ben Miller: Volcano
Carter Ford: Lessons for an Incomplete Black Boy
Chris East: My Brain is Soup, Your Hands Are the Spoons
Chris Turner: Childish
Freddy Quinne: In Sickness
Jay Light: Wrong! A F*cked Up Game Show
Jeromaia Detto: MUSH
Really enjoyed this show when I saw it last year. A true clown.
Kelly McCaughan: Catholic Guilt
Kyle Legacy: King of Comedy
Lee Hudson: Baggage Limit
Marc Jennings: Marcsism
I thought his self-produced special last fall was outstanding.
Mark Nelson: Getting Better Man
Mark Simmons: More Jokes
Mick McNeil: I’m Not Anything
Miles Calderon and Levi Meltzer: Mr Cardboard
Reuben Solo: Please Clap
Another fantastic self-produced special.
Rory O’Hanlon: The Best of Me
Selena Mersey: Madonna/Whore
Won several awards at Brighton Fringe.
Sid Singh: Table For One and American Coloniser
Crowdwork queens.
Stuart Goldsmith: Spoilers (A Climate Crisis Stand-Up Show)
Keen to see the Podfather take on the Climate. Seems to be crushing it.
This Side of the House (dir. by Annabel Anisfeld)
Timmy Booth: Timmy Booth’s Manhole
Tom Ballard: Good Point Well Made
Veronica Osorio: Medicine Woman
Getting tons of buzz in the Los Angeles clown community.
Vittorio Angelone and Friends: Off the Cuff
Worse Than You (prod. Disco Nap)
Zoe Brownstone: A Bite of Yours
I have a really good feeling about this show.
…and that’s only 127 of the 3,742 shows on at the festival this year. So yeah, I’m officially pumped.
If you’re going to be there, please let me know. If you noticed any glaring omissions, feel free to reply to this email or sound off in the comment section below.5
And if you like to play pickup basketball, there’s a group of us that get together during the festival to play, so give me a shout if that sounds like something you’d be up for.
Happy Fringe!
–Davy Reindeer
snet from my iPhoen
And yes, I’m single.
Funnily enough, the only show that didn’t come from either of the two recent powerhouses actually won the 2023 award (Urooj Ashfaq, Assembly George Square).
Although with their Teviot location under construction this year, I think their spot has officially been usurped by Monkey Barrel Comedy.
The Shortlist: Trygve Wakenshaw: Nautilus, BRUCE! (Tim Watts and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd), Spencer Jones as The Herbert in Eggy Bagel, Mat Ewins: Adventureman 7: The Return of Adventureman, Zach and Viggo: ThunderSWAP, James Acaster: The Trelogy, Mae Martin: Dope, Lauren Pattison: It Is What It Is, Michelle Brasier: Average Bear, Sam Campbell: Comedy Show, Julia Masli: Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, Jack Tucker: Standup Comedy Hour
(and if I forgot your show, I AM SO SORRY, really tried my best here)
David is a genius!
Miles here, if somehow that isn't enough shows, come see 'Mr. Cardboard' at the Hoots Potterrow Big Yurt for a twisted 13:30 mid-day show.
https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/mr-cardboard
"Surreal, sinister and side-splittingly funny. 'Mr. Cardboard' is the perfect show.” - Luke Rollason
“The Snowman, if that snow was a euphemism for cheap cocaine... Dark, funny, occasionally poignant, wilfully odd” - British Comedy Guide
We also won the Atlanta fringe Audience Choice Award!
I might also be seen wearing a purple morphsuit exit flyering a Stamptown show, so if you forget I can remind you then.
Great list David! If you’ve got the time/energy would love for you to check out my show WRONG! A F*cked Up Game Show. We’re running August 1-11 at The Caves (Just The Fancy Room) at 11:30 PM. Cheers! instagram.com/wronggameshow
