Greetings from the Edinburgh Fringe, where the nominees for Best Comedy and Best Newcomer were just announced.
Proud to say two of the five eligible “must-see” shows from my annual Fringe Guide were nominated (Sarah Keyworth: My Eyes Are Up Here, Natalie Palamides: WEER).
Best of luck and congratulations to all of those in the running for the two prizes.
Hello all, I’m thrilled to share we’ve officially reached 1,000 subscribers to this mailing list, a far cry from the 322 readers we had at this time last year.
While I generally think that “milestone” numbers are overvalued, as they only exist because we evolved from ten-fingered primates and developed a base-10 numeral system accordingly1, it’s still triple the amount of readers we had one year ago, today.
And that’s pretty neat.
The fact that anyone at all is reading these articles, finding them valuable, sharing them around, and/or implementing some of the strategies within is deeply fulfilling.
This iteration of the mailing list was created in late 2019, after my write-up about attending a Kanye West listening party hit the front page of the r/Kanye subreddit.
I personally messaged everyone who commented nice things on the post, thanked them for their kind words, invited them to subscribe, and we were off to the races.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the high school Facebook status era2, or my brief flirtation with Tumblr.
Here’s my very first Tumblr blog post from July 2012:
Glad to know that over 12 years later, not much has changed.
Whether you've been here since the HPHS op-ed days, or only joined because of my recent Edinburgh Fringe Guide, your presence and feedback has been invaluable.
And so, as a way to give back and further enhance the value of this community, I am excited to introduce a new section to the mailing list: one where I get paid!!
I’m still working on a name for this section.
Suggestions on the whiteboard at the moment are: The Green Room, The Back-End, The Rear-End, and David Zucker’s Privates, but the best idea wins.
What You’ll Get
This new section will feature bi-weekly, exclusive output for paying subscribers, including:
“Backstage Pass” Columns: Data-driven analysis and case studies on successful growth strategies for my clients, paying subscribers, myself, and industry leaders.
Case Studies will include comedians like Britain’s Got Talent winner Viggo Venn, Off-Broadway’s Caitlin Cook, and corporate brands like [REDACTED].
Exclusive video interviews, in which I’ll show an exemplary video, analyze the metrics and online performance, and bring on its creator to talk it through.
Subscriber Mailbags: Answering instructive questions from all of you.
You can submit a profile / video / email blast for me to review, and I'll provide personalized, actionable feedback the same way I would on a client call.
Some elements I expect to advise on: organic social growth, copywriting, social media caption writing, website optimization, and accessibility.
Simply email me at david@bouncehousedigital.com with the subject line MAILBAG and I’ll answer a select few every week, depending on the volume.
Office Hours: Participate in live Q&A sessions where you can get real-time answers from not only me, but the rest of the community.
Pricing
Still figuring out the pricing structure as I gauge demand, but I’m leaning towards a monthly subscription model with multiple tiers that increase in value a la Patreon.
Current thought for the base rate is $11.65/month.
The reasoning behind this pricing is because it’s the current price to “pick my brain over a coffee” at my local Starbucks, which is a thing I get asked about 20 time per month.
So consider this a monthly opportunity to do just that.
If that is out of your price range, there will still be public-facing free articles each month. But hopefully the value I’ve offered - be it here or over at the Cramer Comedy Newsletter - demonstrates this would be a worthwhile investment in your own growth.
As a thank you for being a reader thus far, I am offering everyone currently subscribed a 30-day free trial to the new tier:
And since I know many people read these articles and forward them along to others within their company or drop it in the #marketing Slack channel, I am introducing a group subscription discount for anyone within your organization, here:
I look forward to this next phase, and to continuing to help everyone grow their audience – at least until I’m whisked away by Tylenol PM to run their TikTok.
Cheers,
David
And yes, I will forever be mad about Russell Westbrook winning the 2017 NBA MVP because he “averaged a triple-double”…
